Walking into Regravel’s headquarters, I immediately sensed a vibrant commitment to sustainability. It was more than just an ethos; it was a practice, deeply embedded in the company’s culture. Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Emma Riley, Regravel’s Sustainability Manager, who shared the company’s journey towards achieving BREEAM certification for several of their projects. Our conversation was both enlightening and inspiring, offering a glimpse into the impactful world of green certifications.

Emma greeted me with a warm smile and a firm handshake, her passion for sustainability evident from the outset. “Regravel has always been committed to environmental sustainability,” she began. “But it’s one thing to be committed and another to have your efforts validated through certifications like BREEAM.”
BREEAM, or the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, is a world-leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. Emma explained that achieving BREEAM certification involves rigorous assessment across a range of categories including energy, health and wellbeing, innovation, land use, materials, management, pollution, transport, waste, and water.
“We’ve had several projects awarded BREEAM certification,” Emma proudly stated. “Each project represents a significant achievement and a testament to our adherence to sustainable practices. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about making a genuine impact.”
One of the standout projects Emma discussed was the redevelopment of an old industrial site into a mixed-use community space. “When we started, the site was an environmental nightmare,” she recalled. “Contaminated soil, dilapidated buildings, the works. But we saw the potential for transformation.”
Regravel’s approach was meticulous and comprehensive. They began with an extensive environmental assessment to understand the site’s challenges and opportunities. “We collaborated with environmental scientists, urban planners, and local communities to ensure our plans were both ambitious and feasible,” Emma said.
The redevelopment project incorporated a range of sustainable practices. Renewable energy sources were prioritised, with solar panels installed on all new buildings. Green roofs and walls were integrated to enhance biodiversity and manage rainwater runoff. High-efficiency HVAC systems and smart building technologies were implemented to reduce energy consumption.
“One of the most rewarding aspects was the community involvement,” Emma shared. “We held workshops and consultations throughout the project, ensuring that the local community had a voice in the redevelopment. It wasn’t just about creating sustainable buildings; it was about fostering a sustainable community.”
The project achieved BREEAM Excellent certification, a milestone that Emma and her team were immensely proud of. “It was a rigorous process,” she admitted. “But the certification validated our efforts and demonstrated our commitment to sustainability. It was a moment of immense pride for everyone involved.”
Emma emphasised that achieving BREEAM certification is not the end of the journey but rather a continuous process of improvement. “Sustainability is dynamic,” she said. “We are constantly looking for ways to improve our practices and reduce our environmental impact. Each project teaches us something new and helps us push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Regravel’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond individual projects. Emma highlighted several initiatives within the company aimed at fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. “We have an internal green team dedicated to promoting sustainable practices across all departments,” she explained. “From reducing waste in our offices to promoting sustainable commuting options for our employees, we are constantly striving to minimise our environmental footprint.”
Our conversation moved on to the broader impact of green certifications like BREEAM. Emma noted that such certifications play a crucial role in driving the industry towards more sustainable practices. “Green certifications set a benchmark,” she said. “They provide a framework that helps companies understand what good looks like in terms of sustainability. They also offer a level of transparency and accountability that is essential for driving real change.”
Emma’s insights were both profound and practical. Her passion for sustainability was infectious, and it was clear that Regravel’s achievements were the result of dedication, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to making a positive impact.
As our conversation drew to a close, Emma reflected on the future of sustainable construction. “The challenges we face are significant,” she acknowledged. “But so are the opportunities. With continued innovation, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, I believe we can create a built environment that not only meets our needs but also protects and enhances our natural world.”
Leaving Regravel’s headquarters, I felt inspired by the company’s journey and achievements. Their story is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals and organisations can have when they prioritise sustainability. The path to achieving BREEAM certification is not easy, but as Regravel has shown, it is a path worth taking for the benefit of our environment and future generations.
