During my meeting with Sarah Thompson, an enthusiastic team member at Geek Retreat in Hartlepool, I was immediately captivated by her fervour for the distinctive establishment she has been part of since its inception. As we settled into our seats amidst the lively decor of the cafe, Sarah’s excitement was unmistakable.
Successful low-energy building design hinges on careful planning. Focus360 Energy can help.
“Geek Retreat is not merely a shop or a cafe,” she began, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. “It is a community hub for aficionados of geek culture. We’ve been here since April last year, and witnessing our growth has been nothing short of remarkable. We started as the fiftieth store in the UK, and now we are poised for further expansion.”
Recently, plans have been submitted to Hartlepool Borough Council’s planning department to extend Geek Retreat by annexing the ground floor of the adjacent property at 103 York Road, formerly a nail salon. The proposal aims to increase the seating capacity from 40 to 60, thereby offering more space for patrons to enjoy both the unique merchandise and the delightful menu items, which range from burgers to milkshakes.
Sarah elaborated on the necessity of this expansion. “We host regular events and tournaments for various games and hobbies. These events have been immensely popular, but our current space restricts the number of participants. By expanding into the neighbouring property, we can accommodate more people, allowing more fans to engage with their favourite games and meet like-minded individuals.”
The proposal, submitted by Adam Bingham, outlines a clear vision for the new space. According to the planning statement, the development is deemed a suitable and appropriate use of the former nail salon premises. It underscores that the expansion will not only sustain the existing local services but also enhance the community experience by providing a larger, more comfortable area for social interaction.
“The expansion is not solely about physical space,” Sarah explained. “It’s about the potential to display more of our stock. We have an incredible array of figures, posters, clothing, comics, and trading cards. With more space, we can showcase these items better and elevate the shopping experience for our customers.”
One of the most notable aspects of Geek Retreat is its role in combating social isolation. The planning statement emphasises that the cafe offers an excellent venue for individuals who struggle with personal interactions or isolation to become part of a group and meet new people. “This has been one of the most rewarding parts of my job,” Sarah confessed. “Seeing people come in, find their tribe, make friends, and feel a sense of belonging is truly heartwarming. The expansion will allow us to extend this opportunity to even more people.”
Despite the potential changes, the expansion is considerate of the existing structure. The plans indicate that there will be no alterations to the external structure of the building, with only minor internal changes required, such as the removal of fake walls and the creation of a doorway between the two buildings. All food will continue to be prepared in the existing kitchen area, ensuring that the quality and variety of the menu remain unchanged.
Interestingly, while the expansion will not create new jobs, it will help maintain the current staff of seven employees. Sarah sees this as a positive development, emphasising that the existing team’s expertise and passion for the business are invaluable. “We have a fantastic team here. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and truly dedicated to making Geek Retreat a welcoming place for everyone. Maintaining our team is crucial to preserving the atmosphere and service our customers have come to love.”
As our conversation drew to a close, Sarah shared her aspirations for the future of Geek Retreat. “We are eagerly awaiting the council’s decision next month. We believe in our vision and the positive impact it has on the community. This expansion is a step towards making Geek Retreat an even more integral part of Hartlepool. We are excited about the possibilities and ready to welcome more people into our geeky haven.”
In reflecting on Sarah’s experience and the plans for Geek Retreat, it becomes evident that this is more than just an expansion of physical space. It represents an expansion of community, opportunity, and the shared passion for all things geek. As the proposal awaits its decision, the anticipation within Geek Retreat and among its loyal patrons continues to build, heralding an exciting future for this unique cultural hub in Hartlepool.
