Mastering Sustainability: A Journey with WSP’s BREEAM Consultant

In a world increasingly attuned to the urgency of sustainability, professionals like Laura Jenkins are at the forefront of ensuring that our built environment aligns with eco-friendly principles. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Laura, an Assistant Consultant/Consultant specialising in BREEAM at WSP, to discuss her role and the nuances of sustainability assessment. What unfolded was an insightful conversation about the intricacies of BREEAM assessments, project management, and the importance of a holistic approach to sustainability.

“As someone who has always been passionate about the environment, joining WSP was a natural step for me,” Laura began, her enthusiasm evident. “The company’s commitment to sustainability and its comprehensive approach to environmental consulting really resonated with my own values and goals.”

Laura’s role involves leading and supporting a variety of assessment projects, including BREEAM, LEED, Home Quality Mark, WELL, and Fitwel. She emphasised the importance of having sound assessment skills that cover a wide range of development types. “Every project is unique and brings its own set of challenges,” she noted. “That’s what makes this job so fascinating and fulfilling.”

One of the key aspects of her job is her specialist knowledge and previous licences in BREEAM, including BREEAM In Use. “BREEAM is a leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment,” Laura explained.

Laura’s day-to-day responsibilities are varied and dynamic. “One moment I might be leading a BREEAM assessment for a new office building, and the next I could be liaising with ecologists and engineers to ensure that a residential development meets sustainability criteria,” she said. “It’s all about ensuring that every aspect of a project is aligned with sustainability goals, from energy efficiency to waste management and beyond.”

Strong technical capability is crucial in her role, and Laura has built this through years of professional experience within consultancy. “The technical side of things is really where you need to be on top of your game,” she asserted. “Whether it’s understanding the latest UK and European legislation or being familiar with international standards such as HQM, LEED, and WELL, keeping up-to-date with industry knowledge is essential.”

Laura also highlighted the importance of project management skills. “Managing time and resources effectively is fundamental to delivering successful projects. It’s about balancing multiple assessments and ensuring that each one is completed within the programme and budget,” she elaborated. “This requires a mix of strong personal management and the ability to coordinate with various stakeholders.”

One of the aspects Laura finds most rewarding is the collaborative nature of her work at WSP. “We have a fantastic team here, and I really value the opportunity to engage with other specialist disciplines. Working with ecologists, engineers, and other experts allows us to develop comprehensive ESG strategies and reporting,” she said. “This interdisciplinary approach is what sets WSP apart in terms of delivering holistic sustainability solutions.”

Laura’s role also involves leading sustainability assessments to certification and liaising with the Building Research Establishment (BRE). “Proven experience in delivering multiple assessments to certification is key,” she pointed out. “It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about ensuring that every project meets the highest standards of sustainability.”

Her background in environmental science and membership in relevant professional bodies have also been instrumental in her career. “Having a relevant degree and being part of professional organisations provides a solid foundation and keeps you connected with the latest developments in the field,” she added.

When asked about the qualities that make someone successful in this role, Laura was quick to mention a can-do attitude and an appetite for continuous learning. “Sustainability is an ever-evolving field, and there’s always something new to learn. Being curious and proactive about expanding your knowledge is crucial,” she advised.

Laura’s enthusiasm for energy and sustainability is palpable, and it’s clear that her work is more than just a job—it’s a vocation. “What drives me is the knowledge that I’m making a positive impact on the environment and helping to create a more sustainable future,” she concluded with a smile.

My conversation with Laura Jenkins provided a fascinating glimpse into the world of sustainability consulting. Her expertise, passion, and dedication to her role at WSP are truly inspiring. For anyone considering a career in sustainability, her insights offer valuable guidance and highlight the importance of a holistic, collaborative approach to environmental consulting.
