The City of Wolverhampton is set to embark on a remarkable journey of transformation with the recent approval of a significant planning application for a leisure hub at the heart of the city. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the esteemed Superbowl UK, promises to invigorate a 17,000 square foot area on Victoria Street, formerly occupied by disused commercial units. With an anticipated opening in early 2025, this entertainment complex is expected to become a dynamic centre of activity, drawing both residents and visitors to the city.

Superbowl UK, renowned for delivering top-tier leisure experiences, will introduce an innovative mixed-use venue featuring 12 cutting-edge bowling lanes, a Crazy Club Soft Play area for children, interactive darts, a bar and diner, and a SEGA Prize Zone Arcade. This forward-thinking initiative not only aims to infuse new energy into the city centre but also aligns seamlessly with the City of Wolverhampton Council’s broader vision for urban revitalisation. This vision emphasises improved connectivity, expanded housing, job creation, skill development, and a bolstered visitor economy.

The development forms a pivotal component of the council’s strategy to transform city centre retail spaces into more dynamic and engaging environments. Encouragingly, this approach is already yielding positive results, as evidenced by independent tourism data from STEAM, which recorded an increase in city visitors from 9.8 million to over 10 million last year. These statistics highlight the potential impact of the new leisure hub on local tourism and economic vitality.

Councillor Chris Burden, Cabinet Member for City Development, Jobs, and Skills at the City of Wolverhampton Council, has expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is exactly the type of new development our extensive works on Victoria Street were designed to attract. It will be great to see works starting on site soon now that planning approval has been granted.” His comments underscore the council’s commitment to fostering developments that not only enhance the urban landscape but also stimulate economic growth and community engagement.

The introduction of the leisure hub is projected to significantly enhance the city’s leisure offerings, creating 30 new employment opportunities for local residents, spanning management roles and positions focused on guest experience. Furthermore, the anticipated increase in footfall and dwell time generated by the new venue is expected to bolster both existing and emerging businesses in the area. This aligns with ongoing plans for major regeneration around the Market Square, in collaboration with the ECF, further cementing Wolverhampton’s position as a city on the rise.

The project will be executed by Catella APAM’s sustainable retrofit and principal contracting business, Vantage, with an investment of approximately £500,000 in landlord works. This sustainable approach underscores the council’s dedication to environmentally conscious development practices, ensuring that growth is balanced with ecological responsibility.

Harry Wilce, Asset Manager at Catella APAM, has expressed confidence in the project’s potential, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Superbowl UK to the Mander Centre as the main anchor for our leisure offer. This development will improve the customer experience at the centre, extend operating hours, and generate a significant increase in footfall for the city centre.” His remarks reflect the optimism shared by stakeholders who recognise the transformative potential of the development in shaping the future of the city’s leisure landscape.
