In a decisive move towards bolstering sustainable energy, the UK government has recently allocated a significant multi-million-pound investment to two prominent companies located in Hull and Blackpool. This financial backing is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at diminishing the nation’s carbon footprint while championing renewable energy adoption. The recipients of this funding, Ideal Heating on National Avenue in Hull and Gledhill, a respected cylinder manufacturer in Blackpool, both operate under the umbrella of Groupe Atlantic. The announcement of this substantial investment was made by Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers, during her visit to the headquarters of Ideal Heating in Hull.

The funding, totalling £5.2 million, is set to profoundly accelerate the production of heat pumps—a key component in the UK’s transition to eco-friendly energy solutions. Jason Speedy, Chief Operations Officer of Ideal Heating, expressed his excitement over the funding, describing it as a “vote of confidence” in their strategic plans to enhance heat pump production. This financial boost is anticipated to not only increase manufacturing capacity but also sharpen the company’s technological edge and elevate workforce expertise. The investment is timely, as the UK’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions is more pressing than ever, given that heating 28 million homes accounts for nearly 20% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. By fostering the development and deployment of heat pumps, the government is tackling this environmental challenge directly.
In addition to the government’s contribution, Ideal Heating and Gledhill have pledged an extra £6.8 million towards this initiative, culminating in a total investment of £12 million. This collaborative effort is poised to result in the production of 115,000 air source heat pumps and indoor controls annually by 2030 at the Hull facility. Concurrently, the Blackpool site will manufacture 120,000 pre-plumbed hot water cylinders each year within the same period. This marked increase in production capacity is expected to not only generate new employment opportunities but also stimulate economic growth in both regions. John Cook, Production Director at Ideal Heating, emphasised the company’s commitment to pioneering innovative technologies that will efficiently heat British homes and businesses for the foreseeable future. He noted that Ideal Heating has already transitioned from coal to gas-powered products and is now advancing towards low-carbon solutions in alignment with the government’s overarching strategy to decarbonise the heating sector and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The funding announcement represents the inaugural award from the government’s Heat Pump Investment Accelerator competition. This initiative seeks to unlock private sector investment in the UK’s renewable energy sector, promoting collaboration between businesses and the government to drive innovation and sustainability. As the UK continues to confront the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, investments in technologies such as heat pumps are becoming increasingly indispensable. They present a viable solution for curbing carbon emissions while providing efficient and cost-effective heating solutions for residential and commercial spaces. The collaboration between the government and enterprises like Ideal Heating and Gledhill underscores the potent impact of public-private partnerships in realising shared environmental objectives.
This strategic investment in Ideal Heating and Gledhill is a pivotal step in the UK’s pursuit of a sustainable energy future. By supporting the production of heat pumps, the government is enacting concrete measures to address the significant issue of greenhouse gas emissions from heating. This initiative not only promises environmental benefits but also paves the way for economic opportunities, positioning the UK as a frontrunner in the global transition to renewable energy. The synergy between public policy and private enterprise is proving to be a formidable force in the journey towards a greener, more sustainable world.
