When I sat down with Diana Harper, a senior engineer at DuPont, her enthusiasm was palpable. DuPont had just secured two prestigious R&D 100 Awards for their groundbreaking work in electric vehicle (EV) battery assembly and fire-safe construction materials. Often referred to as the “Oscars of Innovation,” these awards recognised DuPont’s significant contributions to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. As Diana shared her insights, it became clear that these innovations were not merely technical achievements but pivotal steps towards a more sustainable future.

Diana began with evident pride, “To see our hard work recognised on such a prominent stage is incredibly validating. It reinforces our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.” This commitment is exemplified by their award-winning BETAFORCE™ elastic structural adhesive, a revolutionary product in the EV battery assembly sector. BETAFORCE™ is particularly notable for pouch cell battery bonding, eliminating the need for primers or pre-treatment, which are both time-consuming and costly. “Traditional adhesives often require these steps to bond effectively,” Diana explained. “BETAFORCE™ bonds aluminium laminated film substrates directly, simplifying the manufacturing process significantly.”
BETAFORCE™ is formulated with 30% renewable and bio-based materials, aligning with DuPont’s sustainability goals. The adhesive cures at room temperature, thus avoiding the energy-intensive high-temperature curing ovens. Furthermore, its elastic properties enhance the durability and crashworthiness of EV batteries, providing an additional layer of safety during vehicle operation and charging. Diana highlighted the broader implications, “As the world shifts towards electric vehicles, the demand for efficient, sustainable, and safe battery solutions is skyrocketing. BETAFORCE™ addresses these critical needs, making it a vital component in the EV revolution.”
Equally impressive is DuPont’s Tyvek® Trifecta™ A2 Breather Membrane, designed for high-rise and higher-risk buildings. This innovative breather membrane allows water vapour to escape without the need for ventilation, while also being fire-retardant. “Fire safety in construction is non-negotiable, especially in high-rise buildings where the stakes are incredibly high,” noted Diana. Tyvek® Trifecta™ offers a reliable A2 fire rating, which is essential for compliance with stringent building regulations in the UK and other regions.
The membrane’s non-combustible material composition makes it suitable for use in buildings above 18 meters, where fire safety regulations are particularly stringent. Additionally, it is lighter and has longer UV resistance, making it easier and more cost-effective to install. “The combination of Tyvek® Trifecta™ and AirGuard® A2 FR Tape creates a comprehensive fire-retardant system,” Diana added. “This ensures that buildings are not only safe but also energy-efficient. It’s a win-win for both builders and residents.”
Our conversation revealed that these innovations are part of DuPont’s broader strategy to address global challenges through advanced mobility and sustainable construction. “These awards are proof that our strategic investments are delivering growth and making a real difference,” said Diana. “We’re not just creating products; we’re developing solutions that help our customers tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues.”
BETAFORCE™ contributes to the transition towards electric vehicles, which are crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. On the other hand, Tyvek® Trifecta™ enhances fire safety in buildings, thereby protecting lives and property. Both innovations are emblematic of DuPont’s mission to drive sustainable and safe technological advancements.
As our interview drew to a close, I asked Diana about her aspirations for the future. She responded with a smile, “We’re just getting started. Innovation is a continuous journey. We’re always looking for new ways to improve and make a difference. The recognition we’ve received is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams. It motivates us to keep pushing forward.”
The story of DuPont’s recent accolades is compelling, filled with innovation, dedication, and a clear vision for a better future. Diana Harper’s insights revealed that these award-winning technologies are not merely products; they are integral to a broader mission to create a more sustainable and safer world.
