In an industry often characterised by traditional methodologies and incremental advancements, innovation emerges as a beacon of progress. The announcement that Avove, in collaboration with Ecofill, has been shortlisted for the esteemed British Construction Industry 2024 Awards signifies a pivotal moment. I had the privilege of conversing with Sarah Mitchell, a Senior Project Manager at Avove, who detailed the journey and impact of their pioneering Soil Management Initiative.

“It was an ordinary Tuesday morning,” Sarah began, recalling the momentous news. “Patrick Rafferty, our Business Director of Operations, gathered us in the conference room with a rather enigmatic smile. When he revealed that we had been shortlisted, there was a brief silence, followed by an eruption of cheers.” The enthusiasm in Sarah’s voice was unmistakable. “Being shortlisted alongside our partner Ecofill is not merely an accolade; it’s the culmination of months and years of relentless effort, research, and collaboration. It’s a testament to our team’s dedication and the innovative spirit that propels us forward.”
The Soil Management Initiative, which earned Avove and Ecofill their place among the finalists, stemmed from a need to tackle the environmental and logistical challenges posed by traditional soil management. Sarah elucidated the essence of the initiative: “We recognised that the prevalent methods of handling subsoils and clays were not only inefficient but also environmentally detrimental. By processing and transforming these materials into fully certified aggregate replacement products, we discovered a way to recycle subsoil while significantly reducing CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts.”
Initially implemented at the Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme in Cheshire, the initiative has already demonstrated promising outcomes. “This project enabled us to refine our methods and validate the feasibility of our approach,” Sarah observed. “The results surpassed our expectations, leading to notable reductions in road traffic, noise pollution, and social disruption.”
The collaboration with Ecofill has been instrumental to the initiative’s success. Sarah highlighted the synergy between the two organisations: “Ecofill brought their expertise in transforming subsoils, while we provided practical on-site implementation. This partnership has been a perfect amalgamation of innovation and execution. Dr Nigel Griffiths and his team have been crucial in pushing the boundaries of what is achievable.” Ecofill’s Chairman, Dr Nigel Griffiths, had earlier expressed his pride in the partnership, stating, “Our work at the Vyrnwy Aqueduct has demonstrated the potential of our technology to significantly reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact. We are proud to lead the way in pioneering solutions for a more sustainable future.”
The Soil Management Initiative is not merely a technical feat; it signifies a paradigm shift in the construction industry’s approach to environmental sustainability. “What we have developed establishes new benchmarks in efficiency, sustainability, and community impact,” Sarah emphasised. “By minimising the need for imported and exported aggregates, we are significantly cutting CO2 emissions and other adverse environmental impacts. This is the future of construction.” Sarah also touched on the broader implications for the industry: “Our initiative is being adopted across the construction sector, proving that sustainable practices can coexist with high-quality standards. This is vital for the industry as we transition towards more environmentally conscious practices.”
With the British Construction Industry Awards approaching, the atmosphere at Avove is one of cautious optimism. “Being shortlisted is already a tremendous honour,” Sarah remarked. “It casts a spotlight on the crucial role of innovation in our industry and motivates us to continue pushing the boundaries.” She concluded our conversation with a note of anticipation: “Regardless of the outcome, this recognition is a victory for us. It validates our efforts and encourages us to keep striving for excellence. We are excited about the future and the sustained impact of our Soil Management Initiative.”
As I departed from Avove’s office, it was evident that their journey is far from complete. The shortlisting for the British Construction Industry 2024 Awards is not just an acknowledgment of past accomplishments but a stepping stone towards a more sustainable and innovative future in construction.
