In an engaging discussion with James Robinson, Operations Manager at Hemsec Manufacturing Ltd, his enthusiasm for the company’s latest venture was palpable. Hemsec, a longstanding entity in the industry since 1928, has embarked on a new chapter of innovation, facilitated by a £1 million loan from Mayor Steve Rotheram’s Flexible Growth Fund.
Successful low-energy building design hinges on careful planning. Focus360 Energy can help.
“We’ve always been pioneers,” James remarked with evident pride. “From our early days making cork cabinets for ice-cream makers in St Helens, to being among the first in the UK to develop structural insulated panels (SIPs) for residential use in 2007, this loan marks the latest chapter in our story of innovation.”
The financial boost has enabled Hemsec to establish a new Structural Insulated Panel Manufacturing Hub in Knowsley, creating 25 new jobs and offering two apprenticeships for local residents. “The new plant is a game-changer for us,” James explained. “It’s not just about increasing our production capacity; it’s about leading the charge in modern, energy-efficient construction.”
At the heart of Hemsec’s operations are Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), highly advanced components fabricated off-site and transported to construction sites for assembly. “SIPs offer superior airtightness and insulation compared to traditional masonry methods,” James elaborated. “This means homes can be built faster, are cheaper to heat, and have a significantly lower carbon footprint.”
One of the standout aspects of Hemsec’s new hub is the cutting-edge technology it houses. “We’ve invested in a pioneering press machine,” James noted with evident pride. “This machinery not only increases our production efficiency but also ensures the highest quality of our panels. It’s a transformative moment for us and for the British manufacturing industry as a whole.”
James also underscored the broader impact of the loan on the local community. “Creating 25 new jobs is significant, especially in today’s economic climate. Beyond that, we’re contributing to the city’s ambitious goal of becoming net-zero carbon by 2035. Our SIPs play a crucial role in building low-carbon homes, which are not only more sustainable but also more affordable to heat.”
Local housing associations are already benefiting from Hemsec’s innovation. “We’re working closely with them to develop low-carbon homes that can be built quickly and cost-effectively,” James shared. “These homes are a lifeline for many, reducing energy bills and improving living standards.”
The Flexible Growth Fund’s loan, the maximum amount available to a single applicant, was celebrated at the official opening of the new plant. Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram stated, “This is exactly what our Flexible Growth Fund was created for—empowering local companies to innovate, create jobs, and stay ahead in their field. Hemsec’s new manufacturing hub is not just an investment in their future but in the future of our region.”
James echoed these sentiments. “Support from the community and local government has been crucial. The Flexible Growth Fund has allowed us to take a significant step forward, and it’s reassuring to know that the city believes in our vision and capabilities.”
Furthermore, Cllr Mike Wharton, Cabinet Member for Business, Investment and Trade, praised Hemsec’s efforts. “Hemsec has long been pioneers in modern methods of construction, and this loan will help them stay at the forefront of this exciting sector while creating jobs for local people in the process,” he said.
As our conversation drew to a close, James reflected on the broader implications of Hemsec’s work. “A fabric-first approach to sustainable buildings is crucial,” he emphasised. “It’s about ensuring the performance of our homes is optimised now and remains for the lifetime of the building. We’re not just building homes; we’re building a sustainable future.”
The £1 million loan from the Flexible Growth Fund has undoubtedly set Hemsec on a path to further success, enabling them to continue their legacy of innovation and commitment to sustainable construction. With their new manufacturing hub in Knowsley, Hemsec is not only bolstering the local economy but also contributing significantly to the global push towards a more sustainable future.
