When I sat down with Mark Turner, the project manager at SCIS Group, it became immediately apparent how fervently the Fareham-based company is embracing their latest venture. Known for their exemplary work in insulation and energy efficiency, SCIS Group is now making a significant foray into the residential construction market. Their ambitious pilot project involves the creation of two innovative, eco-friendly three-bedroom homes in Gosport.
Successful low-energy building design hinges on careful planning. Focus360 Energy can help.
“We’ve been planning this for a while,” Mark began, his enthusiasm palpable. “These aren’t just homes; they’re a glimpse into the future of sustainable living.”
These properties are part of a pilot scheme that incorporates a range of cutting-edge design features and energy-efficient technologies. From air source heat pumps and solar panels to advanced insulation and rainwater recycling systems, SCIS Group’s new homes are built to set a new standard in residential construction.
One of the most striking aspects of these new homes is their unconventional layout. Unlike typical British homes, these eco-houses have bedrooms on the ground floor and living spaces on the first floor. Mark explained the rationale behind this design: “The idea is to optimise energy efficiency and make the best use of natural light. The living areas, where people spend most of their day, get more sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting and heating.”
The rooftop design is another standout feature. It’s divided into five sections, with skylight windows on one side and solar panels on the other, strategically positioned to maximise energy collection. “We’re expecting to achieve an EPC ‘A’ rating for these homes,” Mark added, clearly proud of this achievement. “This means that our residents could have energy bills as low as £50 a month, or £600 a year.”
The homes are equipped with a suite of advanced technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability. Air source heat pumps provide heating and hot water, while underfloor heating ensures a comfortable indoor climate. High-performance insulation and energy-efficient windows and doors minimise heat loss, making the homes incredibly efficient.
“We’ve also integrated ventilation systems that ensure a constant supply of fresh air without compromising on energy efficiency,” Mark said. “And the rainwater recycling system is another unique feature. It collects and stores rainwater, which can then be used for gardening or flushing toilets, reducing the demand on mains water.”
Hot water recovery systems capture and reuse heat from wastewater, further enhancing the homes’ efficiency. “Every element of these houses has been designed with sustainability in mind,” Mark remarked. “We want to create homes that not only meet but exceed current energy standards.”
Despite their advanced features, these eco-homes are expected to take no longer to build than standard three-bedroom homes. This efficiency is crucial for SCIS Group’s long-term vision. “Our ultimate goal is to scale up this initiative and build more eco-homes across the country,” Mark explained. “We want to set a new standard for residential construction – one that’s efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly.”
The pilot project in Gosport is not just about showcasing what’s possible; it’s also about gathering valuable insights. “We’re eager to see how residents interact with these new technologies and what kind of impact they have on their daily lives,” Mark said. “This feedback will be invaluable as we refine our designs and prepare for larger-scale projects.”
For the Gosport community, these new homes represent more than just a housing development. They signal a commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking design. “The need for more affordable homes across the country is well documented,” said Nic Gillanders, Chair of SCIS Group, in a previous statement. “We’re excited to contribute to meeting this need while also prioritising energy efficiency.”
As our conversation drew to a close, Mark emphasised the broader implications of the project. “It’s not just about building homes; it’s about creating a sustainable future. We want to inspire other developers and show that eco-friendly housing is not only viable but essential.”
SCIS Group’s foray into residential construction is a bold and promising step towards a more sustainable future. With their pilot eco-homes in Gosport, they are not only setting a new standard for energy efficiency but also demonstrating that affordable, sustainable housing is within reach. As we parted ways, I couldn’t help but feel optimistic about the future of residential construction. SCIS Group’s dedication and innovative approach are paving the way for a new era in housing – one where efficiency, affordability, and environmental consciousness go hand in hand.
