So, you’re thinking about taking on an interior design project? That’s fantastic! It can be incredibly rewarding, but let’s be honest, it can also feel a little overwhelming at first. I’ve been there, trust me. To help make the journey smoother, I’ve put together eight steps that I’ve found really helpful. These aren’t just theoretical either; I’ve used them on projects ranging from a small apartment refresh to helping a friend renovate their entire house. And honestly, they work. Whether you’re just tweaking a single room, or going for a full-blown home makeover, these tips will help you create a space that actually feels like you.

1. Nail Down Your Vision (and Your Budget!)

First things first, before you even think about paint colors or scrolling through endless furniture options online, take a moment to really consider what you want from the space. What’s the main purpose of the room? What kind of vibe are you aiming for? What colors bring you joy? And, critically, what can you actually afford? Start gathering inspiration from magazines, Pinterest boards (we all love Pinterest, don’t we?), even visits to furniture showrooms or hotels you admire. Create a mood board. I find that this helps to see everything in a clear way.

It’s so easy to get carried away, but that budget is your best friend and worst enemy. I once knew someone who didn’t set a budget before she started a kitchen renovation, and the project had to be stopped for over a year whilst she saved more funds. A solid budget isn’t about limiting yourself, it’s about being realistic. Factor in materials, labor costs (if you’re hiring professionals), and always, always, add a buffer for those unexpected expenses that seem to pop up out of nowhere. Trust me, they will.

2. Space Planning: Measure Twice, Cut Once (Literally!)

Accurate measurements are absolutely critical. You’d be amazed how many design projects go sideways because of a simple measuring mistake. Measure everything, and I mean everything. Get the room’s dimensions, sure, but also meticulously note the location and size of windows, doors, fireplaces, built-in shelving – anything that’s permanent.

Once you have all your measurements, create a floor plan. You can do this by hand with graph paper, or use online design software if you’re feeling tech-savvy. This is where you can start experimenting with furniture placement. How’s the traffic flow through the room? Where does the natural light come from? Does the layout actually make sense for how you’ll use the space? Because the last thing you need is your couch stuck right in front of a window.

3. Mood Boards: Your Design Compass

A mood board is, in my opinion, is essential for seeing everything in one place. It’s a visual representation of your design concept, a place where you can bring together the images, fabrics, colors, and textures that capture the aesthetic you’re going for.

I create both physical and digital mood boards depending on the project. A physical board is great for tactile things like paint swatches and fabric samples, while a digital board is perfect for collecting images from the web. What do you think, should I create a mood board for you?. The goal is to refine your design direction and make sure all the elements work together harmoniously. Plus, a mood board is a fantastic way to communicate your vision to contractors or designers, minimizing misunderstandings and ensuring everyone’s on the same page.

4. Choosing the Right Design Elements

With your mood board as your guide, now you can start thinking about those key design elements. Start with the big stuff, like furniture. Will it fit, function well, and does it work with your overall aesthetic? Next up, consider the color palette. Think about colors that complement each other and create the kind of mood you’re going for. Don’t forget the flooring, wall coverings, and window treatments! So important. It’s fun to mix and match styles and textures, and that’s how you create a space that’s unique to you.

5. Shed Some Light (Literally!)

Seriously, lighting can make or break a room. It’s not just about having enough light, it’s about creating the right ambiance. You’ll want to consider the different layers of lighting: ambient lighting for overall illumination, task lighting for specific activities (like reading or cooking), and accent lighting to highlight artwork or architectural features. I always try to incorporate a variety of lighting fixtures – overhead lights, table lamps, floor lamps, even wall sconces – to create depth and visual interest.

Don’t forget to maximize natural light, too. I like using sheer curtains or blinds to let the light flood in, and strategically placing mirrors can really brighten up a space by reflecting light.

6. Communication is Key

If you are working with contractors, architects, designers, or anyone else, talk, talk, talk. Keep the lines of communication open. Regular discussions about the progress are vital. Address any concerns immediately. Make sure that everyone is on the same page regarding the vision. Clear communication helps prevent costly mistakes and ensures a smooth, efficient workflow. It really does.

7. The Art of Accessorizing

Once you’ve got the big stuff sorted, it’s time for the fun part: styling and accessorizing! This is where you can really personalize the space and inject your own personality. Think artwork, decorative objects, throw pillows, rugs… these are the details that make a house a home.

When accessorizing, don’t just throw things together randomly. Pay attention to the details. Make sure accessories complement the design scheme and create a cohesive look. It’s also a good idea to declutter frequently, I have found it is easy to collect dust. And speaking of dust…

8. The Final Walkthrough: Spotting the Imperfections

Before you pop the champagne, take a thorough walkthrough to spot any imperfections or areas that need a little adjustment. How is the functionality? Is the lighting optimal? Is the overall aesthetic in alignment with the vision you started with? Making these adjustments now ensures the finished product is flawless and truly reflects what you were hoping to achieve from the start. The space should be something you can be proud of. So, that’s it! Those are my eight steps for design project success. Follow them, and I’m confident you’ll create a space you’ll absolutely love. Good luck!

  1. So, accessorizing is the “fun part?” I thought the fun part was convincing myself I could actually afford this whole endeavor after step one’s budget reality check. Anyone else feel that burn?

    • Haha, I totally get that! Maybe “fun” was a bit optimistic! But seriously, that initial budget check is KEY. It can be a little painful but prevents bigger problems later. I find breaking down the project into smaller, more manageable phases makes it less daunting. What about you?
